Writing Q&A

Do you write original fiction?
Yes! I have a degree in English Lit with a minor in Creative Writing, and part of my senior thesis was a small collection of short stories, all connected by a supernatural theme. After a long post-college hiatus where I wrote very little, I started doing writing contests in 2017 with a friend to reignite that spark. Now I'm in the (very slow) process of revising stories I've written for those contests to submit to literary magazines. I've currently got about 40 stories to play with, so no small feat.
Update 8/8/23: I actually placed in the 6th Writer's Playground Challenge at the end of July! You can check out my 5th place winning story, Time Like Water, here!Update 12/10/23: I placed in another contest! This time I was runner-up in my genre (Halloween Frights) in the Autumn 2023 Short Story contest over at Writing Battle. Unfortunately the runner ups don't get published, so this story will remain a mystery until I decide to do something else with it!Update 3/10/24: Oops, I did it again. Once again runner up in my genre (Buddy Cop) in the Winter 2024 Flash Fiction contest at Writing Battle. No publication for runners up. :(

Writing Contests?
Yeah, they are a lot of fun. I've participated in four different ones over the course of six years: NYC Midnight (both Short Story & Flash Fiction), Writing Battle (Short Story & Flash), Writer's Playground & Twist in the Tale. There are quite a few more out there, plus more run by these same organizations, but I tend to avoid anything under 1000 words because I am a wordy bitch. (I made an exeption for this in 2024 and tried a 250-word and 500-word Writing Battle, and although I still feel too constricted by the word counts, I had fun!)

Enough about you - tell me more about the actual contests.
NYCM
Writing Battle
Writer's Playground
Twist in the Tale
All these contests are fee-based, BUT you get judge feedback from all of them, and are able to participate in forums for NYCM & Writing Battle to get peer feedback.
NYCM: You get assigned a genre and two prompts (depends on contest but usually either a object or character and an action or location). There is no switching - you get what you get, and you gotta make the best of it! Sometimes you get some real wacky prompt combos, but those can yield some pretty cool stories.Writing Battle: Same deal as NYCM, but you get limited prompt swaps - so you are not usually stuck with what you are originally assigned. A unique and fun feature of WB is you are ALSO a judge! At lower levels of the contest, you get to read stories from other groups and provide feedback and decide who wins the "duels". Finals are judged by professionals.Writer's Playground: No genre assignment! You get to choose between several different location and character prompts, and then there is an assigned object everyone must include in their stories. This contest also has the highest word limit at 3000 words, which I appreciate very much.Twist in the Tale: New contest for 2024! You get a main genre and then everyone is split into different groups with different subgenres. There is some swapping of the other prompts allowed. Also has a nice community sharing system for peer feedback, but is industry judged.

When did you start writing fanfic?
Back in Junior High / High School. My first fandom forays were dubbed Anime - Digimon & Monster Rancher. My Monster Rancher fanfic still exists on a very old fan site - I check every so often to see if it's there. I haven't re-read it, but I'm sure it's absolutely atrocious.

And then?
Then, in college, I became incredibly obsessed with Ginger Snaps. After discovering fanfiction.net and devouring what little existed in that fandom, I decided to write my own. Fortuitously, a certain Aussie bloke decided to do the same around the same time, and we ended up striking up a friendship after exchanging fic reviews and encouraging each other's writing pursuits. That friendship eventually turned into a romance, and we've now been married for 14 years.

Why are all your fics on AO3 from 2020-date?
From 2009-2015 or so, I took a long hiatus from writing in general. I did start and then abandon a few Dragon Age & Mass Effect fanfics from 2015-2017, but it was Star Wars: The Last Jedi & the Reylo ship that spurred me into writing fic in earnest again in 2018. Once again, I started a bunch of stories and ended up abandoning them.
It was really the pandemic and my transition to working from home in 2020, leading to the consumption of all the GingerRose fic I could get my hands on, that finally got me writing and posting again. That community was incredibly friendly and encouraging and helped me get over my anxiety about sharing fic again after so long!

What fandoms are you writing for now?
I'm currently deep in a revived obsession with Ginger Snaps. I have half a dozen WIPS (all Brigitte/Tyler - shocking, right?), including my long-languishing sequel to Pick Your Poison. But I no longer post WIPs without having a complete draft done (as tempting as it is to just get something out there!).
The one closest to completion (as of August 2024) is a post-original movie AU where both Sam & Ginger survive as wolves, and Brigitte has to deal with that and her own infection, all while navigating a budding relationship with Tyler.Other things I've got in the back of my brain:
Completing A Good Man is Hard to Find
A Cyberpunk GingerRose one-shot
A Roselo fic
An Angel/Kate fic (Angel)
Maybe, possibly revisiting my Dragon Age fic - I'd written like 40k of it, and it'd be nice to actually get it up somewhere, even if it ends up being a snippet and not a huge complete piece like I originally envisioned.

Are you ever going to finish It All Starts With Wanting or Sing A Lunar Song?
I updated Sing A Lunar Song in April 2024. The next planned chapter is from Hux's POV. No idea when that's coming.
IASWW - This one is well and truly stalled. I do have a very loosy goosy plan that's been there since Day 1. I just lost interest. I never say never, though, so I may be able to revive it someday!

Art Q&A

Do you have formal training?
Technically, sorta, a little? My BA also includes a joint Studio Art focus, but considering I went to a Liberal Arts college, the art department was a bit iffy. I don't really think I actually learned much from my art-related time there, but I did enjoy it. Even in high school, my art teacher basically just let me do whatever the hell I wanted. Honestly, I consider myself mostly self-taught, with help from tutorials along the way. And I still am such an amateur, it's not funny. So much still to learn.

You draw lots of random unrelated shit.
Yep LOL. I have very eclectic tastes and some of my fandoms are leftovers from my younger years that I've revived, and others have been with me all along. So my art reflects that.

Your style is also all over the place.
You noticed? I tend to bounce between different styles (lineart/color vs. "painted") because I'm still learning and sometimes one works for what I want better than the other. But I can assure you it's all me.

Do you take commissions?
I have in the past and hope to again. I'm the process of setting up a Kofi thingie, but as with all things, I'm incredible slow. Maybe I can get it up and running by the end of 2023.
